Algebra, Fable, Paper Homes and Great Canadian Energy Research

Hello everyone,

A busy April so far! Here is a quick update on what we have been doing in our classroom:

Math: We are working on Patterns and Relations and specifically focusing on Algebraic equations. Students are learning to solve for a variable in a given algebraic equation.
For example,  find x, if 2x + 3 = 27.
We have also worked on solving for variables where, the algebraic equations involve integers.
For example, find x, if -3 + x = 9

Students should have completed the assignment sheet provided to them for solving these integer problems using preservation of equality method.

Currently, students are also working on identifying the pattern and the relation between input and output in a provided table or diagrams using algebraic equation.

Language Arts: Currently, students are working on Fables. All the students should have submitted a hard copy of their first draft and should have received initial feedback on their Fables by now. As next step, the students are working on making an iMovie using different compilation of pictures and a voice-over. Students are being asked to finish their iMovie and their final draft by tomorrow. They would be presenting their Fables to the class tomorrow.

Social: We have completed the lesson on 'War of 1812'. Students were asked to illustrate their understanding through pictures mainly by answering three main questions:
1. Who were the 3 stakeholders in the war of 1812?
2. What events caused the war of 1812?
3. Why were the Canadians involved?

These should be complete and submitted. I am missing some of the assignments. This is expected to be done before the end of this week, if not submitted already.

Science:
1. Paper Homes - This week, we have begun developing our Paper Homes. For this project, students are working individually or in pairs. The students were asked to develop their blueprints/floor plans of their paper houses, which includes the inside view and the front view. Once they have done their blueprints and a picture of the actual house that they plan to recreate, they are allowed to begin construction. Today, many of the students have started building their frames for their homes.

As the next step, students will test their houses using infrared thermometer to identify how much thermal energy escapes their paper houses.

2. Great Canadian Energy - Today we started our assignment of Great Canadian Energy Source. In this assignment students have to chose BEST energy supply for the FUTURE in Canada. As a class, we discussed about different forms of energy. Example: Nuclear Energy, Coal Energy, Hydro Energy, Solar Energy, Geothermal Energy etc. Please review for assignment expectations: Google Link
