Great Canadian Energy Essay and Earth Day Pledges

Great Canadian Energy Source - Some of the students have already researched and identified 10 facts about the chosen energy resource. Students are expected to cite their resources and also provide details to support their facts. For example, any research, scientific data, numbers or statistical data that supports the facts. Students are also asked to categorize each of the fact to have evidence for being a political, social, economic or environmental factor. Today, we also talked about main energy sources in Alberta. Earth Day Pledge - As part of our Earth Day activities and assembly that would be happening on coming Friday, today every student has typed a contract and pledged to do one thing for next 5 days that would be beneficial for Earth and its resources. Please ask your kids about their pledges. Graphing linear equations - We worked more on plotting linear equations. We practiced questions where (i) an equation would be given and students have to come up with Input/Outp

Bridge Testing and Presentation, Great Canadian Energy Essay and Plotting Linear Equation

1. Paper Homes - Students have almost completed the first phase of their paper homes. As a next step,  students will check how much thermal energy is lost from their paper homes. For their second phase, students will insulate their homes so that they can reduce the lost of thermal energy from their homes. Today, the students were handed over the rubric for paper homes. The link to the actual assignment can be found here . 2. Bridge Testing - This Friday, students will test their bridges against 20N force applied. Students will also present their bridge models in their respective groups. Students are expected to be able to explain their bridge model, based on following criteria: - How the force is balanced throughout the structure? - What are the anticipated stress on the bridge? - Different kind of loads that are expected on the bridge? Live and Static Load - What is centre of gravity? Why is it important to know the centre of gravity of a structure? 3. Great Canadian Energy

Algebra, Fable, Paper Homes and Great Canadian Energy Research

Hello everyone, A busy April so far! Here is a quick update on what we have been doing in our classroom: Math: We are working on Patterns and Relations and specifically focusing on Algebraic equations. Students are learning to solve for a variable in a given algebraic equation. For example,  find x, if 2x + 3 = 27. We have also worked on solving for variables where, the algebraic equations involve integers. For example, find x, if -3 + x = 9 Students should have completed the assignment sheet provided to them for solving these integer problems using preservation of equality method. Currently, students are also working on identifying the pattern and the relation between input and output in a provided table or diagrams using algebraic equation. Language Arts: Currently, students are working on Fables. All the students should have submitted a hard copy of their first draft and should have received initial feedback on their Fables by now. As next step, the students are worki

Week 2 - Update

Hello families! Here's what we have been doing in the last one week: Language Arts Students are working hard towards drafting their first business letter. We are in the process of revision and final edit before sending them out to mentors for their Langevin Market Project. We have been also doing paragraph editing where students are given paragraphs with incorrect punctuations and spelling errors. Students get chance to edit the paragraphs on their own and then we check for corrections as a whole class. They submit their best work from the whole week for their assessment. Math We have completed the review of integers and learned about integer rules. Students were able to solve integer problems with most efficient strategies without using number line. Science We have been learning about structures and forces and how properties of different materials used in a structure plays an important role in a structure. During last week, we learned about different categories of mate

Week 1 - January

Happy New Year Families! Here are your updates for last one week after winter break: Language Arts Students have finished their novel "The Other Place" before winter break and have completed multiple reading responses that was provided throughout the novel study. Currently, they are learning to draft a "business letter" as part of their Langevin Market project where they would contact a mentor for their line of business. Social Studies Students are learning about Fur Trade and different phases of fur trade. As a next step, they will be working on a fur trading post project where they would utilize their acquired knowledge from Science about Structures & Forces to build a fur trading post model. Science We have been learning about different ways to identify a structure in terms of design and function. During last week, students worked on a research activity  where they were asked to research about a structure and identify the influence/impact of its f
